City of Tempe

Goal

To consolidate data from multiple operational systems

Solution

A comprehensive data management system that consolidates and creates reports for millions of records

Results

Introduction

The City of Tempe is a rapidly growing city, nationally recognized for its forward-thinking technology policies. As part of this growth and this focus, it was determined that they needed an automated system that was able to consolidate data from multiple operational systems into a central data warehouse. This was necessary to allow them to improve their administrative reporting capabilities and to also free up staff time to focus on various other technology initiatives.

What did we do?

  • Built an application which provided the means to aggregate data from disparate systems for use in their Enterprise GIS system
  • Provided an architecture that ensured the aggregated data was accessible in an efficient manner
  • Application successfully pulls in over 28,000,000 rows of data from 7 separate data sources on a routine basis
  • Data validation rules improves data quality during the import process
  • The process management framework includes exception logging and notification

How did we do it?

Ephibian built a set of Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) processes along with the framework to run and manage the solution as a whole. This:

(i) aggregates data from key Tempe operational systems (e.g. Asset Management, Permitting, Water, etc.), and
(ii) compares the data against corresponding records from authoritative sources each time an ETL is run. Any discrepancies found are resolved and as a result data quality improved.

Additional ETLs are created to provide spatial database processes that generate maps for the entire Tempe area.

What was the result?

The solution created and built by Ephibian facilitates the City of Tempe’s Enterprise GIS initiatives. The data warehouse now provides a strong and optimized foundation upon which city administrators can perform a level of reporting previously not possible.

Not only that, but the project has allowed for Technology Transfer and the training of City staff to maintain and expand the system to maximize its use across other similar agencies.
